Helen Frankenthaler, "Tales of Genji IV," 1998, woodcut, 47 x 42 inches, edition of 30
Rediscovering Helen Frankenthaler through her prints at the Clark
Saturday, July 1, 2017 - Sunday, September 24, 2017

William Jaeger writes in the Albany Times Union about (re)discovering Helen Frankenthaler in two shows at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA.

He singles out Frankenthaler's project with Pace Prints master printer Yasu Shibata: And the masterworks, for me, must be the set of six ''Tales of Genji'' from 1998, based on her painted designs on wood. Japanese papermakers and a woodcarver created prints on paper from the originals, even carrying over the grain and color of the original wood base. Stunning stuff, straight from the heart of an artist who knew, above all, about entrancing a viewer with just raw materials and a plain surface.
