The Toyota Municipal Museum of Art near Nagoya, Japan, will present a major Nara exhibition. For Better or Worse will feature around 100 works, many of which are having their first showing in Japan.

William Jaeger writes in the Albany Times Union about (re)discovering Helen Frankenthaler in two shows at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA.

He singles out Frankenthaler's project with Pace Prints master printer Yasu Shibata: And the masterworks, for me, must be the set of six ''Tales of Genji'' from 1998, based on her painted designs on wood. Japanese papermakers and a woodcarver created prints on paper from the originals, even carrying over the grain and color of the original wood base. Stunning stuff, straight from the heart of an artist who knew, above all, about entrancing a viewer with just raw materials and a plain surface.

French artist Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985) is the subject of two concurrent exhibitions in Amsterdam. The Stedelijk Museum is exhibiting all of the works by Dubuffet in its collection, through January 7, 2018. The Rijksmuseum, perhaps best known as the home of "the Night Watch" and many other Rembrandt masterpieces, will show a selections of Dubuffet's monumental sculptures, through October 1.

Pace Prints published the prints of Jean Dubuffet from 1971 until the artist's death in 1985 and has presented over a dozen exhibition of his work.

David Hockney Retrospective Breaks Tate Attendance Record

David Hockney’s retrospective at the Tate Britain has become the gallery’s most popular show at all of its four locations. The exhibition, which was on view February 9 – May 29, 2017 garnered 478,082 visitors. According to The Guardian, nearly 35,000 advance tickets were pre-sold, more than any other show in Tate history.

Alex Farquharson, director of Tate Britain, said the gallery had been the “perfect place to showcase one of our greatest living artists. The response to this retrospective – the first in 29 years – has been incredible. It is wonderful that so many people have had the chance to see it, and that they found the exhibition so exciting, thought-provoking and moving. We look forward to many more people seeing the exhibition when it travels to Paris and New York.”

Pace Prints collaborator Nicola López will have a solo exhibition of massive woodcut prints, installed in a site-specific installation at Jacob Lewis Gallery, 521 W. 26th Street, 4th Floor. Big Windows : Skin : Portals will be on view May 19, 2017—June 30, 2017, with an opening reception May 18, 6-8pm.

In Big Windows : Skin : Portals, Nicola López draws on her recent monumental installation In Gentle Defiance of Gravity and Form at Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, to explore architecture as a metaphor for the human experience on both societal and individual levels. Here, López bisects the gallery with the framed-out structure of a wall supporting oversized woodcut prints of windows. The work reorients the viewer’s experience of architecture by creating an exterior within the gallery interior. This constructed slice of cityscape exposes the force and fragility of architectural ambition.

“In a way architecture is very much an externalization of our cultural values,” López explains in an interview at the MOCA Jacksonville, “It seeks to express a society of strength and potential and power but also embodies the real fragility of it.”

At the same time as it speaks to cultural values and aspirations, architecture also serves as a metaphor for the human body. Galvanized steel studs are the bones of a structural skeleton that is skinned by the mylar prints. The windows are at once barrier and portal: the thin membrane that marks the limit between what lies within and what lies beyond.
