Robert Ryman – Conversions To begin, extensive printing experiments were made in both the intaglio and relief areas of the Pace Editions Ink studio – a process guided by suggestions formulated by the artist Robert Ryman. The artist was certain that his prints convey a distinct sense of the print as an object. Narrowing his experiments to relief prints, Robert Ryman and printer Ruth Lingen eventually chose to print on litho plates rather than on a paper substrate. Ruth printed numerous layers of ink from surfaces ranging from traditional linoleum plates to stiffened sheets of industrial felt. The numerous layers of ink and glazes create the luminous surfaces of the prints. Upon signing the editions, Robert Ryman remarked that he and the printer
had made something from nothing as there was no initial image to adapt
or follow. Rather by attentively exploiting characteristics specific to
the relief printing process, these extraordinary prints evolved and will
be remembered as one of the most unique collaborations from our studio.
Each print is housed in a simple container that serves as a kit complete
with instructions and carpet tacks to adhere the drilled print to the wall. |
