| The Collaborative
Process
 |
Printer Bill Hall rolls the soft ground,
which is a waxy acid resistant material, onto a heated copper
plate. When cooled, a thin, smooth, strong piece of tissue
is placed over the plate. Onto this tissue, Georgia Marsh
makes her meticulous drawing of plant materials - fall weeds
blanketed by snow. The soft ground is so sensitive it transfers
from the plate to the tissue the slightest variation in
Georgia’s pencil marks. The paper is removed from
the plate which also removes the soft ground. The plate
is then etched in an acid bath and the drawing is bitten
into place.

Wiping the plate with a soft cloth making sure that all
of the etching marks are properly inked. |
The inked plate is placed on the etching
press where printer Kathy Kuehn pulls a proof and the artist
and printer can commence the collaborative process of proofing,
a process that determines all the final characteristics
of the print - ink color, type of paper, plate size, image
border and size of the edition. This print utilized the
ink color Prussian black and was printed on Hahnemuhle white
paper.
