ABOUT SUGARLIFT AQUATINT ETCHING
These are pictures of Mary Heilmann painting sugar lift onto a copperplate.
Each broad color area in Mary’s print “Hip Hop” has
been enlivened with her gestured brushstrokes using an etching technique
known as sugar lift.
The artist begins by painting the copper plate with a solution of sugar
and black ink. The entire plate is then coated with an acid-resistant
varnish. When the plate is immersed in warm water, the sugar mixture melts,
lifting away part of the varnish. An aquatint is then applied to the plate.
Aquatint consists of distributing powdered resin particles over the plate
that are then fused to the plate using a torch. When the plate is immersed
in acid, the copper is bitten away to create is a tiny dot texture that
gives the illusion of a tonal range when the plate is inked and printed.
