Considered a founding force of both surrealism and Dadaism, Max Ernst's painting, prints, sculptures, poems and graphics have proved heavily influential on generations of artists. Born in Germany in 1891, the artist was also active in New York and Paris. Involved with a prolific group of colleagues including Hans Arp, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall and Marcel Duchamp, Ernst created works that often referenced psychoanalysis and occult imagery, as well as pioneering several technical painting techniques.
