Li Songsong graduated from the Subsidiary School of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1992 before going on to receive his B.F.A. in oil painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1996. Songsong is known for his heavily painted surfaces drawn from found imagery and mass media. He uses magazine clips, film clips, found photographs, and other similar objects and defuses their political natures by artistically reworking them, rejecting political absolutes. The artist employs reliefs, tense brushstrokes, and solid block colors to “paint something that had a certain distance from reality,” in his own words. He has since been the focus of many publications and international exhibitions.
