Qin Feng: Editions & Monoprints

 – , 2009

This presentation will feature an exciting selection of new screenprints, etchings and monoprints by the artist, created at Pace Editions.

Qin Feng’s expressive compositions serve as meditations on time and motion. His bold brushstrokes lyrically combine the gestural impulses of abstract expressionism with the tradition of Chinese calligraphy painting. The artist often playfully pairs the traditional medium of ink with alternative materials such as coffee, tea and oil paint. Qin’s interest in balancing the dynamic between positive and negative space within his compositions mirrors his interest in exploring the delicate harmony between humans and nature. He has said of his work “I am using purely symbolic expressions to represent the integration between China and the West…This expression represents the vast, harsh natural world of my homeland, it’s tragic and brilliant history, and the murky and inexplicable reality of today. Here, then, in one brush stroke, is a soulful cry out to heaven, a jab, an ax swing splitting traditions asunder, and a representation of the tangled web of human emotions.”

Qin Feng was born in 1961 in Xinjiang, China. The artist studied painting at the Shandong Art Institute in Shandong Province, China, graduating in 1985. He lived in Berlin, Germany from 1996 to 1999 where he taught at the Berlin University of Art. The artist has been the subject of numerous international solo and group exhibitions. Qin currently serves as a graduate advisor and professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. He currently lives and works in Beijing, China and Boston, MA.
