Ghada Amer and Reza Farkhondeh: Roses Off Limits

 – , 2009

This presentation will feature a selection of new unique works on paper that the artists have created at the Pace Prints Workshop.

Ghada Amer and Reza Farkhondeh have cultivated an artistic collaboration spanning over 20 years, though they have only recently begun to exhibit their collective works publicly as RFGA. Their partnership seamlessly merged their two distinctive styles to create a dynamic visual vocabulary. For Roses Off Limits the pair created their newest body of work by coupling appropriated sexual images with floral patterns punctuated by the traditional craft of hand embroidery. The impact of their repetitive use of explicit subject matter is simultaneously neutralized by their use of overlapping veils of blossoms and hand embroidery, allowing their images to provocatively peek in and out of the foreground. Each of the 25 monoprints on view was individually conceived and created by the artists with the assistance of Pace’s master printers. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with an essay by the acclaimed poet and critic Vincent Katz.

Ghada Amer was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1963. In 1974, the artist moved with her family to France where she received a BFA and an MFA from the Villa Arson in Nice. Amer also studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA and the Institut des Hautes Etudes en Arts Plastiques, in Paris. The artist has been granted numerous solo exhibitions including a recent retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum in 2008. Amer currently lives and works in New York.

Reza Farkhondeh was born in Iran and received a BA from the University of Tehran in 1980. He subsequently received a BFA in Painting at the Beaux-Arts de Dijon, an MFA from the Villa Arson in Nice in 1991 and also studied at the Institute des Hautes Etudes en Arts Plastiques, in Paris. The artist currently lives and works in New York.

Amer and Farkhondeh’s previous collaborative solo exhibitions include those at Tina Kim Fine Arts, New York, the Singapore Tyler Institute and The Stedlijk Museum in the Netherlands among others.
