Mary Heilmann and Ellen Berkenblit: New Editions & Monoprints

 – , 2008

Mary Heilmann: New Editions & Monoprints will be on view at Pace Prints Chelsea gallery from February 14th through March 15th 2008. The exhibition will feature a new series of archival pigment inkjet, aquatint, linocut & woodcut editions printed and published by Pace Editions.

Mary Heilmann (b. 1940) grew up in southern California, where she was schooled in both literature and ceramics, first working as a sculptor. In 1968, she moved to New York, and was friendly with minimalist artists Richard Serra and Bruce Nauman. Unlike some of her contemporaries, Mary’s work progressed with usage of both bright interrelated fields of color, humor, often taken to be playful and youthful attributes. Heilmann’s influential style of abstraction is widely seen in contemporary abstract painting.

The 4 new editioned prints are a unique pairing of digitally printed realism and traditionally printed color abstraction. The four prints, Thief of Baghdad, Snakey, Lovejoy and Converge (all 2007) are diptychs that represent a departure from Heilmann’s previous works on paper through their incorporation of digital photography. Heilmann uses a series of compositional puns in the works, as well as references to politics and pop culture. Monoprints will also be shown.

The exhibition will also be shown at Pace Prints midtown gallery, located at 32 East 57th Street 3rd Floor.

Heilmann’s work is in the collections of many museums throughout the world, including The Guggenheim Museum, New York: MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA; De Pont Foundation For Contemporary Art, Tilburg, Netherlands; Fondazione Morra Greco, Naples, Italy; Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Gent, Belgium; Moderna Museet, Stockholm and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among many others.
